Builds Knowledge
Unlike other phonics curricula, Bridge to Reading goes beyond a script to help teachers and students understand why phonics instruction matters. Every day, teachers will find opportunities to expand their professional knowledge and build confidence as literacy educators.
Research-Based
Bridge to Reading reflects the latest science on how children learn to read. Digital extensions provide opportunities to expand teacher knowledge as the research base evolves, securing your investment for years to come.
Intentional Design
Every component of the Bridge to Reading curriculum was thoughtfully designed to balance the latest research on how children learn to read with the realities of today's classrooms.

Bridge to Reading Components
Teacher's Editions
The Bridge to Reading teacher’s edition streamlines literacy instruction by integrating Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons with explicit phonics instruction, providing 170 lessons across 34 weeks of comprehensive whole-group instruction in 30 minutes or less per day.
Student READ Books
Student READ Books (Ready, Engaged, Active Decoders) provide opportunities for independent practice, applying sound-spelling relationships, developing decoding skills, improving fluency, practicing encoding, and mastering high-frequency Red Words.
Sound Posters & Sound Stories
Sound Posters help introduce new sound-spelling relationships and can be displayed digitally on myHeggerty. The front showcases matching illustrations from the Sound Story read by the Teacher, provided in the Teacher’s Guide, enhancing oral language development. The back offers uppercase and lowercase letter formation instructions.
Spell Tabs Folders
See Spell Tabs Folders in action during the "We Do" part of Bridge to Reading phonics lessons. Spell Tabs Folders feature Elkonin boxes on the front, enabling children to represent sounds with chips, cubes, or counters. They're laminated for use with dry-erase markers and are commonly used by teachers for modeling word building alongside their own Spell Tabs Folders or Word Construction Cards.
Word Construction Cards & Syllable Boards
Word construction cards are used to model word building for whole-group instruction. The Syllable Boards are used in Grade 2, to write and spell multisyllabic words, writing one syllable on each board and building the word.
Classroom Visual Aids
Classroom Visual Aids Posters, ABC cards, and Consonant Blends & Digraphs cards provide powerful visuals to reinforce alphabet knowledge and help students connect letter formations to the sounds they make.
Sound Wall Cards
Sound wall cards display all 44 English phonemes, emphasizing articulation. They can be used individually or added to the classroom wall as a visual reference for learned sounds.
Red Word Cards
Red Word Cards help students develop automatic sight word recognition. On the front of each card, the Red Word is printed with an octagon shape under irregular spelling patterns, prompting children to pause and analyze the word's pattern. The back of the Teacher Red Word Cards provide sentence examples to build contextual meaning, emphasizing phoneme-grapheme connections mapping for additional support.
Decodable Books
These decodable books offer cumulative unit reviews of sound-spelling relationships and Red Words, fostering independent reading ability. They include diverse fiction and nonfiction texts for enhanced reading proficiency, also available in shareable eBook format via myHeggerty.
